Causes We Support: CA Coastkeeper Alliance

Last year we joined Pledge 1%, a global movement that inspires and empowers businesses to do good in the world. This is why we pledge to donate 1% of our profits to organizations that are doing work we support. One of these organizations is the California Coastkeeper Alliance (CCKAs), an organization that works with local water keepers to develop, implement and defend policies that help protect the state’s water sources. Founded in 1999, CCKA is part of a network of water advocates (with 300 programs in 44 countries) that hold decision-makers accountable and educate the public on how to be local water stewards.

After years of drought, it is no surprise that California’s water resources are a divisive issue in the state. However, CCKA’s mission is to ensure that these sources are protected for current and future use. They focus on a number of issues:

  • Clean water: Preventing stormwater pollution and trash from choking waterways, regulating agriculture pollution, and improving access to drinking water

  • Climate resiliency: Preventing ocean acidification, investing in marine ‘hope spots’, preparing communities for sea level rise

  • Coastal and ocean protection: Protecting the threatened California Sea otter, fighting back against offshore oil drilling, regulating ocean desalination and coastal power plants

  • Smart water choices: Advocating for drought and water conservation, water recycling and stormwater capture

  • Healthy rivers: Protecting water flows and increasing resilience of our rivers and streams

  • Advocating for legislation: Collaborating with Blue Business Council, advocating for tougher laws and ensuring Clean Water Act enforcement

CCKA does it all!

Early this year, CCKA released their 2023’s Top 10 Priorities for CA water. This list includes a wide range of goals including protecting marine life, ocean water quality and preventing stormwater pollution from commercial facilities. Check out the full list here.

Both Pledge 1% and California Coastkeeper Alliance are doing great work and we suggest you join them either with your time, money or just sharing on social media can go a long way!
